DIY Wildlife removal, is it really worth it?

Writer: andy schindlerandy schindler

Spring is right around the corner and in the Nuisance Wildlife Control industry, that means it is the busy season! In the Cincinnati and Lawrenceburg areas, raccoon and squirrels in attic calls start to roll in. Skunk sightings and Mole tunnels in yard calls increase as well. Many times potential customers have questions about ways to remedy the problems themselves. We are always happy to discuss options with customers but make sure we explain the potential risks as well.

Removing a raccoon from an attic is more than just setting a trap and catching a raccoon.

Lets start with the biggest question we get asked. What do I do with the animal after I trap it?

The law does not allow transport and release of an animal elsewhere, so what will you do with this raccoon after it is caught?

Another option many people ask about is, "Can't I just close off the hole after the animal is out of my attic?"

While this may sound like a good idea, many times it will cause more issues than good. first off, how do we make sure the animal is not inside the attic or there is not more than one animal? Second, what if that animal has had a litter of young inside the attic?

If these happen, we can almost promise the animal will create a new entry point into an attic. Many times, a homeowner does not use heavy duty exclusion materials and the animal will chew / rip a new hole in the same area. Other times, they can cause more damage elsewhere creating an opening into the atic. A female with young will do almost anything to reach her young, their maternal instinct is STRONG!

Lets say you trap an animal and dispose of it, now what if it has young inside your home. Now you have another issue finding and removing the young.
